Tallahassee Earrings
18ct yellow gold, rose quartz, amethyst, resin, vintage lucite and carnelian earrings
We’ve got a penchant for making slightly cheeky jewellery. Nothing too in your face, just enough of a reminder that sometimes things just don’t go your way and it can be really rather satisfying to swear…
Handmade in part by Tessa, and in part by her London workshop, the Tallahassee Earrings are the perfect example of our naughty-but-nice jewellery. Tongue-in-cheek, but no less stylish or wearable, this lovingly-crafted piece is commands a bit of attention without being overly overt.
They also combine an unusual mix of hi-lo materials: 18ct yellow gold, amethyst, rose quartz and carnelian contrasts strikingly with resin and vintage lucite. This marriage of the precious with the more everyday is inspired by mid-Century America, when post-war plastic production boomed. Uninhibited by its novelty, makers from all sectors incorporated lucite into their designs. This was particularly true for jewellery, which went on to enjoy a strong costume jewellery trend for the next twenty or so years.
Nowadays we understand the problem with plastic and its affect on the environment. Tessa’s use of vintage lucite here aims to demonstrate that even the oldest of plastics can be transformed and up-cycled into new, dynamic and modern forms, breathing new life into unloved or discarded parts.
