Mother-of-pearl, or nacre as it is more technically known, is an organic composite material produced by some molluscs as an inner layer of shell. It is also the material of which natural pearls are composed. Mother-of-pearl has been used in fashion and jewellery for hundreds of years and more recently is responsible for giving one charitable organisation (the Pearly Kings and Queens) their infamous name.
